"Fly-infested gloves prompt Health VANCOUVER - Health Canada has launched an investigation after flies and what seemed to be larvae were found in the latex medical gloves used by dentists and doctors to perform oral and internal exams like Pap tests or rectal exams. In a statement Wednesday, Health Canada said insects and other foreign matter are a "safety concern." "This would therefore contravene the safety and effectiveness requirements of the medical device's regulations," said the statement. Some latex examination gloves being used by dentists and doctors across Canada contain flies, larvae and unidentified black matter, a Global B.C. investigation has revealed.A technician in Dr. Victor Hasson's Vancouver hair replacement clinic first noticed something strange about one of the gloves imported by Calgary-based distributor, Hedy Canada . A look through a high-powered microscope not only revealed flies with their wings still attached embedded in the gloves, but also metallic black matter. Independent lab tests confirmed the presence of flies, matter consistent with larvae, unidentified black material and also showed there were holes in most of the nine gloves inspected. "Any kind of medical facility will be using these gloves on a continuous basis. It's certainly nothing that anyone would like to see in a medical product," said Hasson. "This may just be the tip of the iceberg, who knows?" Health Canada said one of their inspectors will be contacting the Calgary importer. B.C. Health Minister George Abbott said his ministry has been advised the gloves are not licensed for surgical use. "To that extent, I guess that's comforting," he said. "But we're looking forward to hearing from Health Canada a little bit further." "Recall Concerns Parents, Toy Companies" Schneider-Fisher's comments reflect the quandary many American parents face after the world's largest toy company, Mattel Inc., recalled almost 1 million Chinese-made toys because they may contain lead. It also has stressed-out toy companies going through their inventory to see if their products are harmless. And it has China , again, insisting that its products are safe "Lead scare spurs Fisher-Price toys recall" Aug 02, 2007 07:14 AM WASHINGTON–Toy-maker Fisher-Price is recalling 83 types of toys – including the popular Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego characters – because their paint contains excessive amounts of lead. It is the latest in a wave of recalls that has heightened global concern about the safety of Chinese-made products. It is the largest for Mattel since 1998 when Fisher-Price had to yank about 10 million Power Wheels from toy stores. Read full article
Mattel recalling China-made toys made with lead paint EDMONTON - If a recall on some Fisher-Price Dora the Explorer and Go Diego Go toys have parents mulling a boycott on Chinese-made playthings, you won't be buying your kids much, says a mother who went a year without buying anything made in China . The RFID tire tag solution provided by Advanced ID will not prevent the manufacture of potentially faulty tires, but the use of the Advanced ID tire tag could have decreased the severity of the recall by collecting and storing important historical data and properly identifying each tire. The scope of any quality problems encountered could be contained by knowing the tire's date of manufacture, lot size and other data stored either in the memory in the tire RFID tag or in a customer controlled database keyed into a specific tire ID number. The multiplicity of UPC barcodes found on new tires does not contain the required historical information that can pinpoint the manufacturing process used in a specific tire. The result is that thousands of tires must be considered suspect after a faulty tire is discovered when in fact, it is possible that a very small number of tires are affected.
